Gomer Junior School in Gosport swapped four wheels for two feet on the school run to celebrate Walk to School week!

Gomer Junior Walk to School Week

Pupils and their parents left their cars at home and braced the wet weather to walk to school with the My Journey mascot Basil. An impressive number of pupils walked and used the Park and Stride to get to school.

The school has also recently been awarded the Sustrans School Mark Silver Award for its continued commitment to promoting active and sustainable travel, and last year took part in a ‘scientific’ themed walk to school from Bayside Cabin car park to highlight the number of children who walk to school and to motivate others to join in.

The school has very limited parking and heavy congestion during rush hour, so the school has been working hard to increase the children’s awareness of alternative ways to travel through Hampshire County Council’s My Journey campaign.

Walk to School Week is supported by Hampshire County Council’s Road Safety team and national charity, ‘Living Streets’. According to the charity, by walking to school, parents say they find the journey to school less stressful, their petrol bill goes down, their children perform better at school, and both they and their children feel healthier and fitter.
