National recognition for Hampshire’s ‘Contribution to Sustainable Travel

My Jouney has won the ‘Contribution to Sustainable Travel’ award in Modeshift’s National Sustainable Travel Awards, which recognises projects to promote and encourage active and healthy travel.

The My Journey travel planning team worked with schools and groups of children of all ages around Winchester on scientific investigations into monitoring air quality around school grounds, using the evidence to create ideas to reduce air pollution locally using the My Journey brand.

The project enabled teams of students to compare the air pollution levels in different locations around and beside their schools and college grounds and at different times over the academic year.  The students produced campaign plans to improve air quality through sustainable and active travel on the school run, with help from the My Journey travel planning team.

The project encouraged young people to think about how small actions by individuals can make a big difference to local air quality, and how initiatives could be put in place to reduce pollution and congestion in the city centre

The initiative was funded through the Department for Transport’s Sustainable Travel Transition Year, and the team worked in partnership with Winchester City Council on the air quality experiments.  The scheme is now being rolled out in Fareham, Gosport, the New Forest, Eastleigh and Southampton.
