Pupils at Alverstoke Junior School meet Strider!

Alverstoke Junior School Walk to School Week

To encourage parents to leave the cars at home during Walk to School week, families at Alverstoke Junior School in Gosport met the famous Living Streets mascot, Strider to thank them for travelling actively to school.

The families were welcomed by other pupils from the school whilst the Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) and Travel Ambassadors distributed leaflets about the green cross code along with home made lollypop lady signs with active travel messages on them.

Amy Hartnell Project Coordinator at Living Streets said “It was a real pleasure for Living Streets and our Walk to School Mascot, Strider, to visit Alverstoke Junior School to help celebrate Walk to School Week. An impressive number of pupils were walking, scooting, cycling and using Park and Stride to get to school. Pupils and staff have some impressive and creative ideas to encourage safe and active travel and judging by all the WOW badges on show they are definitely having an impact!”

Living Streets recently completed a route audit to help them assess safe walking routes to school including identifying a Park and Stride site on Gosport seafront. The staff and JRSOs have been taking steps to motivate pupils by demonstrating that parking a little further away from school and walking part of the way can not only help you keep fit but also be fun, making it safer for everyone by keeping cars, and pollution, away from the immediate vicinity of the school.

The school have also recently been awarded the Bronze Modeshift STARS Award and decreased car alone journeys in two years from 23% to 12%. This has involved a number of initiatives including WOW, Bikeability training, Bike It and installing cycle/scooter storage

Walk to School Week is supported by Hampshire County Council’s Road Safety team and national charity, ‘Living Streets’. According to the charity, by walking to school, parents say they find the journey to school less stressful, their petrol bill goes down, their children perform better at school, and both they and their children feel healthier and fitter.
