Railway works over the Christmas period

If you’re planning on taking the train around Christmas and New Year, make sure you’re aware of the upgrades taking place around Southampton that will affect passenger services.

When are these railway works taking place?

The railway works, carried out by Network Rail and South Western Railway, will begin early morning on Sunday 24 December 2017 and finish late on Monday 1 January 2018.

There will also be two earlier dates (Sunday 10 December and Sunday 17 December) where engineering work will take place, which may affect your journey.

What does this mean?

There will be no services running on Christmas Day or Boxing Day.

From Wednesday 27 December - Monday 1 January, rail replacement buses will be running between Eastleigh and Southampton Central, and between Southampton Central and Fareham (via Woolston) due to major engineering work taking place.

Between 27 - 29 December, a revised Saturday timetable will operate across the South Western Railway network, and between 08.30am - 18.30pm trains will run between Portsmouth and Woolston (with buses between Woolston and Southampton Central). The normal timetables will resume from Tuesday 2 January 2018.

Why is this work being done?

The railway service providers are carrying out these upgrades during December as up to 50% fewer people travel over the Christmas period.

As part of the works, more than 100 engineers and track staff will be replacing around 6,000 metres of cabling and around 200 metres of track, to improve reliability of train services for passengers.

What if I need to get to London?

If you’re looking to travel into London (or beyond) from Southampton Central, there will be rail replacement bus services from Southampton Airport Parkway.

Will there be more information coming?

National Rail and South Western Railways will send specific information on the work at Southampton from the middle of November through on-train announcements, social media, local media and station advertising.
