Southampton schoolboy champions road safety on the school run

A local schoolboy is celebrating a different kind of achievement following the installation of a new zebra crossing on Spring Road, Southampton.

Nine year old James Stinchcombe, who attends Ludlow Primary School, has been calling for a pedestrian crossing on a busy section of Spring Road to improve the safety of children on the school run. He was therefore delighted in December to see that work had begun on a new zebra crossing on the road at the junction with South East Road and Sholing Road.

In recognition of James' enthusiasm for the project, he was invited to meet with Councillor Jacqui Rayment, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Transport and Public Realm, and Councillor Eamonn Keogh, Peatree Ward, who has been campaigning for a pedestrian crossing at the junction for several years.

Councillor Rayment said:

"With three schools and a college located on nearby Middle Road, this is a particularly busy stretch of road during the school run. We have been eager to see improved provisions for pedestrians on the road so this is a very welcome development and, since its completion in January, already the crossing has had huge benefits for the many local families and children who cross here every day on the journey to school. I congratulate James for taking such a keen interest in the project and for being a real inspiration to his peers."
