What has changed on Bursledon Road?

Better by bus:

  • Additional priority for buses at traffic lights - making bus travel more reliable and convenient than ever before. The main bus services operating along Bursledon Road are:
  • City Red 9: Southampton City Centre - Woolston - Bitterne - Sholing via City Centre, Merryoak and Bursledon Road
  • Bluestar 18: Millbrook to Thornhill via Shirley, Southampton, Northam and Bitterne
  • Both City Red and Bluestar offer a £9 weekly ticket which provides unlimited travel in the Southampton area, including on the above services. You can purchase tickets from both operators online using the First Bus App (for City Red mtickets) and the Clickit2ride app (for Bluestar). Both operators also provide contactless payment facilities on their buses.
  • The majority of buses in the city now also provide a range of modern facilities to make travelling by bus a relaxing and stress-free experience. These include free onboard Wi-Fi, USB charging points, onboard next stop announcements and real-time next stop information at many bus stops. Most buses are now also fitted with the cleanest Euro 6 engines, so you can sit back and relax whilst knowing you’re also doing your bit for the environment. Better by bike:

  • A brand new 2.6km cycleway along the length of Bursledon Road - to help more people cycle safely and with confidence. The segregated, shared cycleway forms a key part of the SCN3 Eastern Cycle Freeway and connects to a network of 'quiet ways' through Bitterne and on to the existing shared route along the Northam River Bridge to the City Centre. PLUS:

  • Traffic signal upgrades at 11 junctions between Botley Road and Bitterne Road East - improving traffic flows and reducing congestion along this key route into and out of the city.
