Bike doctor and cycle security marking
Bike Doctor clinics
Bike doctor clinics in Portsmouth are currently suspended while we seek further funding to continue this service.
To help keep your bike on the road, we sometimes offer free Bike Doctor clinics providing check-ups and basic repairs to your cycle. Please allow enough time for your bike to be checked, and if required, repaired. Although the Bike Doctor clinics end at 4pm, the mechanics may stop accepting new jobs from 3pm if they are busy. If there isn't enough time to repair your bike you will need to return another day.
At Bike Doctor clinics, a team of experienced bike mechanics will check everything on your bike from wheels to gears, and brakes to brake lights. Any minor adjustments or basic repairs can be made there and then. If they can't fix it immediately, they will let you know exactly what needs doing and a rough cost.
It's important to keep your bike in good working order. Make sure that:
- it is the correct size for comfort and safety
- both tyres are inflated properly and have good tread
- the chain is oiled and properly adjusted
- all brakes work and the brake pads aren't worn
- reflectors and lights are fitted and working. All bikes must have a rear reflector and pedal reflectors fitted by law, and working front and rear lights during the hours of darkness, so remember to keep them clean.

If you leave your bike with the Bike Doctor please collect it by 4pm. Bikes which have not been collected will be stored securely at Community Cycle Hub, Winston Churchill Avenue. Opening hours Mon to Fri 8.30am - 5pm and Sat 9am - 3pm. 023 9281 4967.
Cycle security marking
To help reduce the spread of coronavirus, cycle security marking is currently suspended until further notice.
Portsmouth City Council and Hampshire Constabulary have joined forces to offer residents and students free security marking for their bikes.
Each bike will be permanently marked with a unique code, and added to the national Bike Register database. Security marking is a useful tool which helps to reunite bikes, seized by police forces across the UK, with their owners. It can also act as a deterrent to would-be thieves as the bike is permanently inscribed, making it less easy to sell.
Security marking will be offered for free on a first come, first served basis. On the dates marked 'Commercial Road' we will be located by the fountain in Commercial Road - please note the time indicated below - just look out for the Bike Doctor marquee. On the dates marked 'University' a police community support officer will be located outside the University of Portsmouth Library on Cambridge Road from 1-3pm. See our upcoming dates below:
