Other events for early years settings

There are many events your setting can join, or organise, throughout the year which provide an opportunity to promote active and sustainable travel.

Beep Beep! Day

Take part in a Beep Beep! Day to teach young children, aged 2 -7, important road safety basics and help parents, carers and the wider community understand how to protect children on roads. Brake, the road safety charity, provide an action pack to help you run your Beep Beep! Day, which includes fun activities, stickers, certificates and posters. Visit Brake’s Beep Beep! Day for more information and to sign up to take part.

Walking Five a Day Challenge

Organise a week’s walking challenge at any time of year using our downloadable chart. Simply put a walking week into the calendar and launch it to children, parents, carers and staff. Then the children simply tick off what they've achieved each day and share their results at the end of the week. This could be run during Walk with Wheels Week or Walktober as an additional activity.

World Book Day

World Book Day is a fantastic opportunity to promote active travel and/or air quality messages to your early years community using some of the resources below.

A Wild Walk to School: Available online or on request from the Travel Planning Team, A Wild Walk to School, follows a group of children on their walk to school as they decide to help reduce air pollution.

Journey to School: Part of the Susie the childminder series from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, Journey to School joins the children on their first day back to school as they discover the gifts from Susie to help them get there safely.

Travelling Back in Time to School: A title from the Susie the childminder series, Travelling Back in Time to School, retraces Nanny Dot’s journey to school in 1946 and looks at how different the traffic was then.

Flying Fergus book series: By Chris Hoy and Joanna Nadin, the series will help enthuse children about cycling.
