Living Streets: Walk to School for Primary
Who are Living Streets?
Living Streets are the charity for everyday walking. A generation ago, 70% of us walked to school – now it’s less than half. So their aim is to create a walking nation, free from congested roads and pollution. My Journey are working with them to help achieve this on the school run.
How can your primary school get involved?
WOW - The Walk to School Challenge: A pupil-led initiative to encourage children and their parents and carers to travel sustainably to school, increasing physical activity and reducing congestion. Pupils record how they travel to school using an interactive website called Travel Tracker, and can earn badges if they actively travel to school. Plus, it can help towards your Modeshift STARS, Healthy Schools and Eco School accreditations.
Register your school's interest for WOW with Living Streets
Badge design competition: Each year, Living Streets holds the WOW badge design competition, inviting schools across the UK to submit designs created by their pupils. The winning entries are then turned into WOW badges for the following year and awarded monthly at participating WOW schools.
Walk to School Week: A five-day active travel challenge held each May, which schools can take part in alongside WOW or as a stand-alone activity. It encourages pupils and parents to walk, wheel, cycle, scoot or Park and Stride to school every day of the week.
Happy Shoesday: This is a fundraising event that takes place each May on the Tuesday of Walk to School Week. Children and adults wear the shoes that make them happiest, helping to create safer, more walkable streets for everyone.
