Bike It for secondary schools

What is Bike It?

Bike It was invented by the charity Sustrans to create an active and sustainable travel culture in the school community, to improve health and well-being and to reduce carbon emissions and congestion. It is all about helping young people get fit and healthy by teaching them the skills they need to cycle responsibly.

Bike It in Hampshire

In partnership with My Journey, our Bike It Officer delivers the programme in a number of selected Hampshire schools.

Working with pupils, parents/carers and school staff the Officer will help identify any barriers to active travel. Then design a programme of school projects, training and events to get the whole school and community actively travelling together. When working with a school our Bike It officer can typically:

  • increase the level of regular cycling,
  • reduce the number of young people travelling to school and college by car – with a shift to active travel modes or use of public transport,
  • create a culture of cycling at project schools that can be sustained once the officer has departed,
  • raise awareness of the benefits of active travel.

The Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel

Sustrans’ annual Big Walk and Wheel is the UK’s largest inter-school walking, wheeling, scooting and cycling to school competition. On each day of the challenge, schools compete to see who can get the highest percentage of their pupils walking, using a wheelchair, scooting or cycling to school. The more that do, the greater the chance to win some fantastic prizes from bike and scooter storage to cycle stunt shows by the UK’s best riders. The competition is weighted according to the size of the school, so everyone has a fair chance to win!
