STARS Resources

Modeshift have a range of resources to assist schools with STARS. Please explore the selection available here and find more under the guidance tab on your school's Modeshift landing page.

Modeshift STARS pocket guide and accreditation checklist - This guide gives schools a clear overview of all consultation, travel and supporting initiatives within Modeshift STARS. It outlines what each accreditation level requires and helps schools identify which actions they can plan or complete to develop a strong and effective School Travel Plan.

Hands up survey: How pupils travel to school - This PowerPoint helps schools with conducting their hands up survey to record how pupils travel to school. Each slide shows a visual representation of the travel modes, making it easier to collect results. Schools can use the data to support their School Travel Plan and Modeshift STARS.

Pupil hands up survey: Print-out sheet - This printable hands up survey sheet gives schools an alternative to the STARS online survey. Teachers can record how pupils travel to school by capturing hands‑up responses for each travel mode. Once completed, the results can be entered manually into Modeshift STARS.

Staff hands up survey: Print-out sheet - This printable staff survey sheet offers a flexible way to record how staff travel to work. It can be used in meetings, placed in the staff room or completed by the Travel Plan Champion or pupil helpers. Results can then be added to Modeshift STARS to support your School Travel Plan.

School Travel Policy template - This School Travel Policy template gives schools a clear, ready‑to‑use framework for promoting safe, active and sustainable travel. It outlines commitments to walking, wheeling, scooting, cycling and public transport, and sets out how the whole school community can support healthier, more sustainable travel choices.

Route to school audit - This audit helps schools review the safety, accessibility and suitability of routes pupils use to travel to school. It identifies barriers, highlights areas for improvement and supports planning initiatives that encourage walking, wheeling and cycling. It also provides key evidence for your Modeshift STARS Travel Plan.

Creating a 5-minute walking bubble map - This video shows you how to create a 5‑minute Walking Bubble map in Modeshift STARS, helping families park a little further away and walk the final part of the journey.
