Bike It for primary schools
What is Bike It?
Bike It is delivered by the charity Walk Wheel Cycle Trust (formerly Sustrans) to create an active and sustainable travel culture in the school community, to improve health and well-being and to reduce carbon emissions and congestion. It is all about helping children get fit and healthy by teaching them the skills they need to walk and wheel responsibly.
Bike It in Hampshire

In partnership with My Journey, our Bike It Officer delivers the programme in a number of selected Hampshire schools.
Working with pupils, parents/carers and school staff the Officer will help identify any barriers to active travel. Then design a programme of school projects, training and events to get the whole school and community actively travelling together. When working with a school our Bike It officer can typically:
- increase the level of regular cycling,
- reduce the number of young people travelling to school and college by car – with a shift to active travel modes or use of public transport,
- create a culture of cycling at project schools that can be sustained once the officer has departed,
- raise awareness of the benefits of active travel.

The Big Walk and Wheel
The annual Big Walk and Wheel is the UK’s largest inter-school walking, wheeling, scooting and cycling to school competition. On each day of the challenge, schools compete to see who can get the highest percentage of their pupils walking, using a wheelchair, scooting or cycling to school. The more that do, the greater the chance to win some fantastic prizes from bike and scooter storage to cycle stunt shows by the UK’s best riders. The competition is weighted according to the size of the school, so everyone has a fair chance to win!

The Big Street Survey
Our Big Street Survey is an exciting curriculum resource enabling pupils to investigate the area around their school and create a manifesto on how to make their streets safer and greener.
Working both inside and outside the classroom, pupils explore what they like and dislike about their neighbourhood, before using their manifesto to lobby decision-makers and elected representatives at national and local level to make their changes happen.
Resources for your Primary School
The Bike It scheme offers a range of resources to help you and your pupils get going. These include starting scootering, teaching a child to ride without stabilisers and giving your bike the M check.
