Walktober

Walktober is a challenge held each October to celebrate International Walk to School Month, when school communities are asked to walk/wheel as much as possible to and from school or work. In Hampshire, Walktober has been run annually by Hampshire County Council's Travel Planning Team since 2016.

There has been a great response to Walktober 2022 with over 150 schools and early years setting getting involved. Our two competition prize draws have now taken place and we are pleased to announce the winners below.

Spread the Word! - school and setting competition

Participating schools and settings promoted Walktober and the importance of active travel to their school community throughout October. We asked them to find at least three opportunities to encourage pupils, families and staff to get involved using ideas from the promotion checklist or other creative ways to spread the word. Thank you to all schools who entered the prize draw and delivered some wonderful promotion of Walktober, including social media posts, assemblies, posters, active travel events and in-school competitions.

We are now delighted to announce the winning schools.......

First prize - Chandler's Ford Infant School who have won a bird box camera system.

Second prize - Alderwood Senior School who have won a bird feeding station set.

Your Steps Count! - pupil competition

Pupils were asked to Step Up for Walktober by making an active travel pledge and recording their active travel choices using the Walktober Challenge Card. There were lots of actions they could include - walking/wheeling to school, scooting to the park, cycling to a local shop, using Park and Stride, taking a bus instead of the car on a day trip.

With over 200 entries to the prize draw, Hampshire pupils Stepped Up for Walktober and their fantastic pledges will have helped make a difference to the planet, their wellbeing and our communities. Your active travel choices count so remember to keep your pledge going or make new ones to achieve and stay active through winter.

We are now excited to announce our Walktober pupil prize draw winners.....

The challenge

For 2022 we encouraged all early years settings, primary schools and secondary schools in Hampshire to Step Up for Walktober.

By travelling actively throughout October your school community were stepping up for our planet, our wellbeing and our community. Walking/wheeling, scooting and cycling reduces car use which will improve air quality, benefit health and wellbeing and have a positive impact on the local community by reducing congestion.
