Air Quality for Schools

Cut grass, honeysuckle, the local bakery: there are many smells that we all enjoy on a day to day basis and many of these will be whilst we’re out walking or cycling but often we’re unable to detect these when we’re breathing in car fumes when we walk near busy roads.

Not only is air pollution unpleasant to breathe in but it currently harms the health of millions. Unlike other risks to our health, many people don’t know what causes air pollution, the effects it has on our bodies or how to reduce our exposure to it. The journey to school in particular can have an impact on your pupils’ health and the environment.

The good news is there are lots of simple things we can do to help to improve air quality on the school run. The My Journey School Travel Planning team is working with schools across Hampshire to monitor and raise awareness of air quality and promote ways of creating cleaner air through sustainable travel initiatives and resources.
